"Hiding in Pain Sight" [Documentary Short]
*SECOND PLACE FOR BEST VIDEO BY THE MISSOURI PRESS ASSOCIATION* At the close of 2018, a curious photo editor wanted to know where the Columbia Missourian had been sending photographers and videographers throughout the year. She generated a map from her research and found there were neighborhoods in Columbia where staff was seldom sent. We wanted to correct ourselves. Since January 2019, visual journalists have been sent to these areas to get to know locals and amplify their voices. These are a few of many stories. "Eclipse Enchantment" [Documentary Short]
On August 21st 2017, the sun and moon aligned, offering thousands of people across the U.S. an unforgettable sight. As it became known the line of totality crossed Columbia, MO, pagans and travelers flocked to Oak Spirit Sanctuary to honor the solar eclipse. This chronicles their experience. "Sounds of Mindfulness." [Auditory Documentary]
In this short, B.R.E.A.T.H.E. meditation organizer Christopher Shannon discusses how daily sounds subconsciously affect us and how particular sounds which have been used for centuries- or even millennia- to focus human consciousness. To mirror the mentality of mindfulness, most of this video does not include visuals and prompts viewers to use the extra space to focus on audio and contemplation. The film's minimal footage explores a handmade Shiva temple resting in the surrounding mountains of Santa Fe.
